Too bad about Dhomo. He was really important to the retrieval of the NGE too. Killy actually went down, but it was Dhomo who saved the day (and the Netsphere) by stopping the provisional connection.
But storywise it's good that many of the characters died. Given the high lethality of the Cyber Dungeon it wouldn't have made sense to have all the main characters live until the end. Blame is bleak, and most people met a bleak end. That fits.

Agreed with that assessment. The harsh treatment of the characters goes well with the integrity of the fiction.
