See, I don't think the story is cliche, per se. I'd posit that it's more along "Nihei does Shounen." There are familiar elements there, but they're told through a different set of eyes. If anything in the story is really cliche, it's the stuff that Nihei himself keeps repeating, like the Gaunas or whatever. For a guy with such a tremendous visual style, he has a really limited/unfocused imagination. So in one way, I'm glad to see him branch out. I just wish branching out wasn't marrying the giant robot/shounen genre with Nihei's monsters. |

IMHO The main thing is Nihei-san is actually writing and drawing a great deal of "human interactions" and not just great scenery and architecture. Almost all of his earlier works was about WORLD not about those who live in the world. I think that it is good to see that Nihei-san is trying to walk away from clishe of "Blame" that struck to him after it's glorious appearance. Yeah. We al know that Blame is masterpice aswell as Noise. All of Nihei Oneshots also very interesting atleast. "Biomega" was huge experiment, and it didn't go all to well. Now "Cydonia" - it seems that Nihei doing it well. |
