Has anyone noticed, that Nihei didn“t used any tone layers for his prequel? Has he done this on purpose or was it just a tryout?

I noticed it, and I think that this was on purpose.
Its a bit gothic with this technic, pretty good for NOiSE.

What do you think he used for making this style - gouache, acrylic or just plain watercolour?

Screen Tones are plastic films with tightly printed patterns of dots that artists apply to work to add value and texture.
artificium: Nihei works colors mostly in Acrilic from what I've seen.
Nihei's crosshatching has always been expressively strong. I believe that he did Noise! in that way to make it distinct from Blame!.
