| Post subject: | Looking for typical manga techniques & where to get tone |
I want do draw more US comic style stuff, but want to use typical techniques used in manga, like the tone effect,,, I just can't seem to find where to get this stuff,,, I know it can be done digitally, but the effect is not as great in my opinion then doing it with hand,,, Does anyone know where to get these "tone sheets" or whatever they're called?? Also, are there any other techniques typically for manga?? Any help is appreciated,,, |

I think you can find on amazon some books about drawing manga, but I'm not sure they can be so detailed.... |

A bit late, but to point out some of the differences in manga vs US comics, US comics tend to be drawn with color in mind, and thus often see a lot more solid black shapes and less hatching. While there are plenty of exceptions, a lot of manga tends to focus on the linework with toning instead of using solid black. Also note how many of the Shonen Jump comics, which must be churned out at a chapter a week, tend to have more of the hatching, with screentones used only to block in complete sections in order to save time and probably money. As for color, a lot of manga artists still utilize traditional media. I know markers (which are expensive and hard to use) are popular as are inks and watercolors. If I'm not mistaken, inks and watercolors are pretty similar except that inks are more permanent and cannot be rewetted. Guache (essentially opaque watercolor) is also very popular, and what Nihei used before moving pretty much exclusively to digital. While if you're aiming for nihei's gritty look you shouldn't encounter much trouble, trying for a clean, solid band of color is no easy feat, but guache will give you the best flat color of any medium once you master it. Just don't even sneeze on it, or it will get ruined. |

it's never to late!! hihi,,, thanks for your post,,, i'm working with inks, gouache and acrylics right now,,, i'm very pleased with the outcome, but still want to experiment as much as possible,,, i like mixed media paintings, and working on a short story right now using multiple media,,, i also like the fact that most manga artists do moest of the work themselves, meaning, they pencil, ink and color (and write),,, US comics mostly need 4 different people to do that!! |

I used to print my own screentones back when I drew traditional manga. You can get pretty decent ones with a laser printer. All you need to do is buy adhesive foil and print on it gradients and greyscale fills which you can easily make in Photoshop. Basically any pattern goes because the printer will provide the characteristic dots. You can also set the dot roughness for the printer. If you don't have a laser printer you could also go to a print shop. I made myself a whole bunch of sheets like this and you can even scratch the dots like you do with real screentone... The only downside is that you need to find print-friendly, adhesive foil which isn't too cheap I must admit (still it was much cheaper for me at that time than real screentone) just my 2 cents. |
