or Legend Of The Galactic Heroes
Ever heard of it ? It's a loooong SF, space opera serie. 110 episodes, no less ! There's even more, 2 or 3 movies, and 2 side stories I think. I'm lazy doing a review myself  (and I've seen only 11 episodes), so read the links :

Those 110 episodes came out as OAV, the quality is pretty good for an anime that started in 1988. The 110 episodes are available as english subs. It also contains some of the best spaceship designs I've come across (Brünhild, Barbarossa, Konigs Tieger, Parcivale...) http://www.hlj.com/hljlist2/?Dis=2&SeriesID=722 If you like SF, spaceships, space battles, long developpement, deep characters, go for it !

I am watching episode 23 now and i can say that it is one of the best animes ever made. =D Thanks for the advice Falk!
