Whats a Demo?
A demo is a non-interactive multimedia presentation made within the computer subculture known as the demoscene. Demogroups create demos to demonstrate their abilities in programming, music, drawing, and 3D modeling. The key difference between a classical animation and a demo is that the display of a demo is computed in real time, making computing power considerations the biggest challenge. Demos are mostly composed of 3D animations mixed with 2D effects and full screen effects.

The boot block demos of the 1980s, demos that were created to fit within the small (generally 512 to 4096 bytes) first block of the floppy disk that was to be loaded into RAM,[1] were typically created so that software crackers could boast of their accomplishment prior to the loading of the game. What began as a type of electronic graffiti on cracked software became an art form unto itself.

Final Audition by Plastic


Plastic is one of the best demo groups and won many prize´s on demo contests like 'evoke'. This is one of the best demos I ever saw.

Sooo, can you explain the difference between animation and demo in terms I can understand?

An animation is movie in that the picture is saved into a movie file. It can generated by a very powerful processor and saved in to many pictures into a movie file. Your PC only displays the pictures one after another.

A demo is also an animation, but the pictures are generated by your prozessor and graphics card in realtime in the moment when you see it on your screen. So you need mostly a powerful prozessor to see the animation.

The programmers of this demos originally started to show, what sort of high end animations are possible. On a commodore 64 with ~1 Mhz, a real challenge for programmers. Later, with more CPU power it got more creative and the message and composition was more important. So a new sort of digital art arised. Because of the massive computing power of new PC´s, some made their own rules. For example the 64K contest. This demos can only use less than 64 Kb harddisk space. It is very impressive, what is possible with only 64 Kb.
For example, .kkrieger is a full 3D shooter with nice graphics and only 98 Kb!!!

I wanted to share some of my favourite windows demos since some quite time ago, now I've

got time for this Click on the pic to go to pouet.net site, which catalogues demos and

intros and all demoscene stuff, then click on 'download' or 'video' or whatever else

Try to download those and run them on your pc, youtube vids are just not the same thing.
They are mostly pretty old, so your computers don't have to be cutting edge to render them

properly. I like the mood first, then maybe graphics.
Some of them are demos, which can be several MB big, some are tiny 64k intros - but it's

not the size that matters
