You can't recommend Sci-Fi books without mentioning Isaac Asimov; impossible, he is the grandmaster.
my favs of his are:
The Gods Themselves
The Caves of Steel

I've been reading World War Z: The Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks recently. It's a very well written book, and I would recommend that.
Oh yeah, Max Brooks is Mel Brooks' son.
Max Brooks also wrote the Zombie Survival guide, but it's not a novel, like his latest book.
The book has been optioned, by Brad Pitt (between his movie studio and Leonardo DiCaprio's), I believe, so hopefully we will see a movie of this book in the near future.
